I find I can't get up much enthusiasm for rules," cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead wrote in 1933, in a letter addressed to her female lover, Ruth Benedict, about the tension between her then husband, Reo Fortune, and future husband, Gregory Bateson. A free but highly disciplined spirit dedicated to discovering new cultures and practicing the tenets of open love, Mead was also a prolific writer, whose collected letters have been combined into one volume by Caffrey and Francis, respectively an associate professor at the University of Memphis and curator of a Mead exhibit at the Library of Congress. Assembled with the aid of Mary Catherine Bateson, Mead's only daughter, the cultural anthropologist's vivid dispatches have been categorized by recipient. Addressees include her Philadelphia family, all three of her husbands and several lovers, both male and female, on topics ranging from changing colleges to quelling rumors about her numerous affairs. While Mead's personal relationships tend to be the focus, these connections (particularly with her second and third husbands) were closely intertwined with her professional life. But there is little doubt as to Mead's true obsession: as the writer herself noted to Benedict in 1928, "I think the work is so much more important than any personal issue." Photos. (July)

Manifest at every phase are Mead's independence, curiosity and receptivity; healthy approach to sexuality; and profound fascination with relationships, the foundation for her radical insights into human nature. As Mead's daughter, anthropologist and writer Mary Catherine Bateson, notes in her radiant foreword, her mother "treasured the people in her life." Adler attempts to provide tools to make the leap from information to organized knowledge and wisdom. He suggests remedies for "alphabetiasis," describes the classification of knowledge in Encyclopedia Britannica's Propaedia, and recommends the Syntopicon of the Great Books of the Western World as a guide for learning. In spite of a few inaccuracies, this provocative book is required reading for educators and both students and practitioners in library and information science. Gareth Jones, Texas A & M University Gareth Jones is a professor in the management department of the College of Business Administration and the Graduate School of Business and Texas A&M University. He is co-author on three other major textbooks, including one on organizational behavior (accolades he shares with CONTEMPORARY MANAGEMENT co-author and wife, Jennifer George), one on organizational theory, and a one on strategic management. Jones received his BA & PhD from University of Lancaster, UK. He has taught at University Warwick, Michigan State University, and University of Illinois/ Urbana-Champaign

Jennifer George is a well-published professor as is now the Mary Gibbs Jones Professor of Management in the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business at Rice University. About the Author

Dr. Ekwere J. Peters has over 35 years of petroleum engineering experience in field operations, petrophysics, higher education, and research. He was the holder of the Frank W Jessen Endowed Professorship and the George H. Fancher, Jr. Endowed Professorship in Petroleum Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin where he was a faculty member for over 31 years. From 1997–2001, he was the Chairman of the Department of Petroleum & Geosystems Engineering where he provided administrative and academic leadership to the highly ranked department. At the University of Texas, he taught courses in introduction to the petroleum industry, drilling and well completions, production technology and design, advanced pressure transient analysis, petroleum fluid properties, and advanced petrophysics. He has conducted numerous short courses for the petroleum industry in the Unites States, Canada, Nigeria, Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil, Japan, Indonesia, Ecuador, and Trinidad & Tobago. A recognized expert in flow through porous media and petrophysics, he has published papers on various aspects of petroleum engineering based on the results of original research. Dr. Peters established a reputation as an excellent teacher early in his academic career and consistently received very high ratings for teaching effectiveness at the University of Texas and at industry short courses. He has won numerous awards for teaching and professional excellence including the prestigious Texas Excellence Teaching Award, the Petroleum Engineering Teaching Excellence Award in the Cockrell School of Engineering, the Society of Petroleum Engineers International Distinguished Achievement Award for Petroleum Engineering Faculty, and the Society of Petroleum Engineers Distinguished Member Award. His previous petroleum industry affiliations were with Shell-BP Petroleum Development Company Ltd (Nigeria) in drilling and well completions; United Petro Laboratories, Calgary as the manager of a PVT and Core Analysis Laboratory and Amoco Production Company, Houston in pressure transient analysis in tight gas sands. Currently, he is a senior consultant at Afren USA, Inc., Woodlands, where he oversees the company’s educational initiatives. He holds a BSc, 1st class honors, degree in Engineering from Leicester University, an MS and a PhD in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Alberta, and is a registered professional engineer in Texas.

Good book for non experience to mid experience petrophysicist,

Great reference book and the labs are on point.
