This book is targeting readers who are new to electronics. The content is very basic and the language is kept simple - about on the same level with what is taught in some high schools. Math is simple and also very well explained. Any concepts discussed in the book are explained from ground up. You are not just presented with how something works but the author helps you discover it yourself from the very foundation throughout the book why things work as they do.The book starts to explain conductors and insulators and what current and voltage really means. Next resistors are discussed with Kirchoff's and Ohm's laws. Once this foundation is built, the book moves on to explore the difference between DC and AC and how to calculate impedances with capacitors and inductors before the book starts to dive into semiconductors. The common semiconductors such as diodes, bipolar transistors, and different FETs are explained. The last chapters talk about linear (analog) and digital integrated circuits. The appendix has some valuable information about thermionic (vacuum) tubes which are still found today in high powered radio transmitters.The book is an easy read and helps the newbie to understand the basics of electronics. The book teaches more than you need for the Technician or General exam but less than what is required for the Extra.

This is an interesting book, as it covers a broad amount of subject matter. I struggled with the organization a bit, as Unit 1 - Introduction, seemed to cross into specifics, and some of the other sections seemed to be just introductory. Also, it seems to present some concepts in more depth than related topics. For example, capacitive and inductive reactive responses to frequency are presented, but passive filters are barely touched if at all, while resonant circuits are discussed in more detail. This may be due the importance of resonant circuits in Amateur Radio. In all, I find the depth on par for an introductory text but the breadth of topics inconsistent. As I read more, I found many of the explanations well thought out and easy to absorb. There seems to be some hidden gems of knowledge that aren't represented in the table of contents, which is great, but points to an organization issue. I like this book a lot.

I am hoping to get my ham radio license and wanted to do more than memorize the answers to the exam questions. As I was studying, I realized that I was lacking some basic knowledge of electronics. This book was published by AARL (the National Association for Amateur Radio) and is geared toward people with that interest. That's why I bought it. So, if as you read the book, it seems basically to be trying to help people like me get their ham radio licenses, you're exactly right. If you're a ham wannabe, like me, I recommend it. I do agree with some of the other reviewers who wrote that the organization seems a bit strange - but the training manuals are organized strangely too, IMHO. So there's that. Still for the reasons I bought it, I am glad I bought it.

I purchased "Understanding Basic Electronics" due to a renewed interest in electronics as a hobby. The book is written in a very straight forward easy to read format, and does an excellent job in explaining the basics of electronic circuits. It is extremely well suited to the beginner, and is an wonderful refresher for anyone who was a hobbyist in the past.As for the title of my review - I really wish this book came out 35 years ago, while I didn't realize it at first, the author was one of my electronics teachers in college many (many....) years ago. If this book were available back then, I probably would have been a much better student in his class.

In an attempt to educate myself on basic electronics, I order several books. I like this one the best. Nicely written and easy to read. It is written for amateur radio people, of which I am not, but it suits me just fine as a basic understanding of electronic concepts reference book.

"Understanding Basic Electronics" provides a simplified vehicle for learning electronics theory. While this is published by the ARRL and aimed at the amateur radio audience, it provides the fundamentals of electronic theory to work with micro controllers or audio equipment. The math required has been simplified with the use of calculators. Even a reference is provided on using the calculator. While an introductory text, the material includes information on digital devices and circuits and even some theory on vacuum tube operation. In all an excellent text that would benefit from more examples and sample problems to work out.

I've purchased quite a few of these types of books over the years. This (to me) is the easiest to understand by far. Highly recommend this for anyone getting started and interested in self teaching at home. Without the benefit of classroom training and a teacher, well written literature is priceless.

Great book. I have no formal electronics or math training and this book presents the topics in a very clear and simple way. I bought it to supplement my ARRL Extra class study guide and they work great in tandem.

This book is an authentic proof of the author's updated and hands-on knowledge of the subject matter. It is definitely a must-read for anyone interested in the voice UX skills and technologies.

It's a good book to start for anyone just starting working on designing conversational interfaces. The book is not a guide, but rather a collection of insights and real world cases from different VUIs out there.

This book gives a great overview for someone like me who is putting their toes in the waters of Voice UIs. Lots of examples and cases that I would not have considered. Thanks for the insights!

Very insightful read, shed a lot of light on the history of voice UI.

It is ok but not really structured. There is a lot of repetitions and it doesn't really provide an actionable methodology. The good part is the extensive experience of the author on designing IVRs.

RICHARD CAMPBELL, director of the journalism program at Miami University, is the author of 60 Minutes and the News: A Mythology for Middle America (1991) and coauthor of Cracked Coverage: Television News, the Anti-Cocaine Crusade and the Reagan Legacy (1994). Campbell has written for numerous publications including Columbia Journalism Review, Journal of Communication, and Media Studies Journal and he is on the editorial board of Critical Studies in Mass Communication and Television Quarterly. As a writer and media critic, he is a frequent speaker on public radio and television.

CHRISTOPHER R. MARTIN is an associate professor of journalism at University of Northern Iowa and author of Framed! Labor and the Corporate Media (2003). I am a medical student from St Georges and find that the book is very good for several reasons. Firstly, it is the first OSCE book to actually have all the specialties in place. Generally, things like psychiatry or obstetrics & gynecology are usually missed out or if they are covered, they are done very sparsely. This is the first book that I have seen to actually cover all the specialties with good depth. Secondly, having read the different sections, I love the 'PRESENT YOUR FINDINGS' section at the end of each section. How many times have we as medical students found ourselves being put on the spot to present to a senior doctor? I have been looking for a book to tell me how to do this, and this book does just that. It also teaches how to present Chest X-rays and ECGs using very good illustrations, which I have found lacking in several books. Finally, I find the structure of the book easy to follow with nice and simple explanations. In addition, there are several sections that are not there in any other OSCE books such as the paediatrics section on Non-Accidental Injury, which is something that is so easy to throw into an OSCE in all medical schools, as it is becoming more and more common. All the chapters are also very well laid out with differential diagnoses just next to the history sections in those chapters, which is a nice added feature. There are few experiences more daunting for medical students than facing the clinical OSCE. The examiners’ faces are often unfamiliar, the pace is out of their control and there is little opportunity to go back and correct mistakes. However, in many ways, those are features of real world practice where junior doctors have to respond to events in real time. For that reason, many medical educators consider the clinical OSCE as the ultimate objective test of readiness to practice. For many years now I have been in the enviable position of merely having to tick the boxes on the marking form. However, I’ve not forgotten the stress that the occasion can induce in even the most talented of students. My advice to my own students is that the best way to mitigate the effects of the inevitable stress, and to perform well when the bell sounds, is to be well prepared. Zeshan Qureshi is a Paediatrician based at Great Ormond Street and the Institute of Global Health. He graduated with Distinction from the University of Southampton, and has published and presented research work extensively and internationally in the fields of pharmacology and medical education. Whilst working in Edinburgh he was part of the leadership team developing a near peer teaching programme, where by junior doctors, throughout south east scotland, were both trained to teach, and delivered teaching across every hospital in the area. This book is an extension of this philosophy: that junior doctors and fresh graduates know how to express complex ideas in order for it to be easily understood from a students perspective.
