I really did enjoy this book. It was one of those 'I'm on holidays, want to relax and read a funny, easy going, sexy novel' kind of books, and it has a 5 star rating in that aspect.BUT IT WAS SO SIMILAR TO OBSIDIAN (the Lux Series).Like not Melania plagiarising Michelle Obamas speech similar, but more like the Similarities of McDonalds and Hungry Jacks burger menus, LIKE THEY'RE LITERALLY THE SAME, JUST DIFFERENT NAMES AND AN ADDITION OF AN EXTRA SLICE OF CHEESE HERE AND THERE. It was as if J L Weil had taken a scaffold, which included all of the main plot points and events in Obsidian and then just rewrote it with demons and different names for the main characters, particularly at the start. As the book went on, I found it started to gain individuality which I enjoyed, however the main parts of the books was just so similar it was almost annoying. Like I was reading it, thoroughly enjoying a part, then next minute I kept on thinking about how the sAMe blOODY THING HAPPENED IN OBSIDIAN!Like she even described Chase's hair as the colour of onyx!! Which happened in all of the lux books...Oh well, if you haven't read obsidian, or have read obsidian - but is someone who could tolerate it if someone stole your jokes, became a comedian and made a s*** load of money by spewing out your jokes but in a little French accent - then you will love this book! As I really do enjoy these types of books, but I don't enjoy it when someone steals an A+ essay from someone else, changes the main topic and grammatical structure, then hands it in and gets an A....
I really hate it when the guy treats the girl like crap but against her better judgement she pants after him anyway. This is why guys treat girls so poorly, they think that it's the way to get the girl. They call this brand of jerk "the bad boy". He even says it to her in the book. It was something like "you love that I'm a jerk". Of coarse he thinks that because every time that they are together heTreats her horribly she mad but can't stop wanting to kiss him. I just don't get it, is there something seriously wrong with this girl's mental state?
If you liked the Lux series by Jennifer Armentrout, you will probably like this first book. The editing is HORRID in the first half of the book, with whole words in the incorrect order, or missing, not to mention a plethora of spelling errors. I almost gave it up just because of those. I swear that the content of the first third of the book was barely tweaked from the first book in the Lux series, so that was really annoying, but still, reading about a hot guy as your neighbor kinda keeps you interested. The story was enjoyable, with seemingly less editing oversights as the book progressed. I liked the main characters and the supporting characters. There was less angst and a faster pace in this book vs. the first book in the Lux series, which was a nice difference. If you like hot guys leading you on, an independent lead girl, and fun supporting characters in a supernatural story, them give this a go. Just don't have a red pen anywhere near you.
The Plot: Angel moves across the country and meets her next door neighbors for the first time. Nothing is ever the same since. She becomes best friends with Lexi and falls for the charming and arrogant Chase. She also discovers that their whole family is not what they seem and that Hell may be closer than she ever thought before. Being chased by rapid hellhounds and demons may just be the beginning of her new life; that is, if she can survive the chase.Key Characters: Angel has to be hands down one of my favorite characters crafted ever. I love her fierceness and her vulnerability. Out of all of the female characters that I have ever read about, I relate to her the most. She is the perfect balance of quirky and normal. She has her own mind, ambitions, and goal. She also doesn't let Chase kick her around, but she can't help but like him, even when's he's a major jerk. It's called being stupidly, foolishly in love. I really love Angel.Chase is the perfect jerk guy that you love to hate and hate to love. You think that she could do so much better, but then, you find out that they are actually perfect for each other. They are suitably matched. They play off each other's strengths...and weaknesses. I couldn't help but love Chase, too.Lexi is the bubbliest person ever written about. She could give Luna Lovegood a run for her money. She is the sweetest little thing, but watch out when she gets mad. She gets REALLy mad. lolTravis is a tragic character in this story. You cannot help but compare him to a lost puppy. I want to learn more about him and I hope that the story will elaborate on him and what went on.Likes: I love the unique story and plot line. I have never read anything like this one before and I will be reading the next in the series. I actually plan on buying one kindle book every month from a series that I have enjoyed reading on my kindle. This way, it ensures that I continue to read a great series that I love. I start so many series, but never finish them. This will help me finish the digital ones that I love that aren't that expensive. The next one in this series is 3.99. A little more expensive than what I usually see, but I will buy it. Four dollars for a digital book isn't bad, especially when you can keep it forever in your virtual library. I also really like the relationships between all of the characters and the secrecy. I feel fully immersed while reading this book, which is a truly great feeling.Dislikes: I don't like that there isn't a lot of world building. I want to really know what this town looks like and feels like. I would have appreciated more descriptions, so I could have pictured what the world looks like that the characters live in. I don't get a real sense of that. The setting is one of the most important aspects of a book to me and I found this one to be sorely lacking. Hopefully, the next book is better and worth the four dollars spent.Overall Opinion: This book is almost perfect, if it weren't for the lack of world building, this book would have been a solid five stars. I highly recommend reading this. It is currently for free on amazon.com, just search the name of the book and it is right there. I look forward to learning more about all of the characters and seeing Angel and Chase's relationship blossom even more. I just love books were the main characters hate each other and love each other at the same time, don't you?4 out of 5 stars
